I want to replace the engine guard that I messed up when I laid my 01 SG down last Labor Day Weekend. It is not scraped up too bad so I am not in a really big hurry and I have seen a few decent used ones and take-offs but they all seem to be '06 and up. However, just from studying the photos, they look like they will fit my '01. Will the 2006 or 2008 HD engine guard bars fit my 2001? What exactly is the difference that I cannot see from the photos?

Thanks for the help.
The differences could be in the width of the lower mounting brackets, the hight of the upper bar mounting point and the location of the pre-drilled holes.
The one that fits for sure is p/n 49007-90A Chrome
From the p&a catalog: For use with mid-controls. Fits 91-05 Dyna models (except 93-05 FXDWG and 94-05 FXDS-CONV. models). Not for use with Dyna Forward Control Kit P/N 49080-93 or Footboard Kit P/N 50580-01 and 50601-01. Will fit with Leather Tool Roll Kit P/N 91714-97A.
Interesting...I also have been having problems with my fender hitting the engine guard at the upper mount only it is not a ding, it is a dent. I am in the process of rebuilding and adjusting the preload on my front fork tubes hoping to eliminate that before I straighten up and repaint the front fender.
The engine guard I have looks exactly like the larger one in your photo at the top mount but the bottom mounts using U-bolts. This is one the ones I was looking at:
It looks identical to the one I have. Unless they are longer from the bottom mount to the top mount, it looks to me that they should fit.
I've got a chrome engine guard that I took off my 2005 Dyna Lowrider. It has highway pegs on it but they are removeable if one prefers. I'd be happy to sell it to you. Shoot me a PM if you are interested.

I am interested if it will fit without having to change anything else. Does it look anything like the one in the photo?
My computer's main system HDD took a dump Friday evening and I had the pleasure <sarcasm> of spending most of Friday evening and Saturday morning trying to get it back up and salvaging all my data. I learned a long time ago to back up everything on a separate hard drive just in case...saved me again.
I ended the weekend on a sour note when both of my front tube seals blew out after I had just rebuilt them...engine guard is not a priority right now.
