Dyna set up properly will get you your ride it like you stole it feel. Softail will get you a kick *** firework show at night in the corners! I kinda like my dyna...
My wife's Iron reminds me of a dirt bike. Mid controls, handlebars and high center of gravity are very similar. The Iron just weighs 3x as much as the average motocross bike.
Now that I think about it. I have ridden my dyna like a dirt bike down into a ditch lined with 6 - 8 inch rocks at 55 MPH. I thought at the time I don't want to dent my tank. So I just feathered the back brakes and rode down the bank stopping some 100 yards or so from where I left the pavement. Those rocks were working the FXDX suspension as if it were dirt bike suspension. It just absorbed the bumps. When I realized everything was still in one piece I rode on an angle 8ft up out of the ditch back onto the road. Scared the **** outta me. But if I had a been on my old softail, the outcome would have been diff.
A Dyna is what you need. Some 13+" shocks on the back, diff handlebars and some stabilizers and you'll be having a blast. I go riding with my buddy that has a supermoto ktm 525 and we tear up all the dirt roads, mountain paths and even some trails with rocks and stuff. I've gotten some good air on it too. And what could remind you of a dirt bike more than wheelies?? Dyna does it all and loves it.
My first Harley was a Softail Custom (96), owned and rode it for 7 years. While I loved it and became one with it (riding), and loved the look. I realized after buying my current ride (09 Super Gilde Custom) that the Dyna was not only roomier, but also feels more sure footed and agile....and now I even believe the dyna is a better looking bike. Maybe it all comes down to "love the one your with".
i do believe that i would like the handling better on a dyna, just afraid that i'd regret selling the crossbones... i love the way the xbones looks, i love the springer front end, its a fairly rare bike... but i would probably love the dyna handling... see what happens when the bike is away for the winter??? you spend all your time online looking at ways to spend money on your bike and all the other bikes you see look reeeeally cool
