15w 50 gold cap.scores beter in every test than hd syn. has all the rateings requierd not to void your warenty. thats why i use it, with the agressive oil change interv. (2500mile) you could use any name brand oil(20w50) and not hurt any thing (motor) i dont like the idea of useing motor oil in the trans. shear ratings are lower on motor oils vers trans lube.

Obviously a Harley is an expensive toy and of course you want it to last as long as possible which is why I'd only put synthetic in mine now. But, back in the early '80's when I started driving street bikes I don't remember ever hearing about synthetic lubricants. I use to ride year round as long as there was no snow/ice on the roads and I never even changedthe oil in any of those old air-cooled Hondas or Yamaha twins I had and never had a prob with them because of oil related issues. If it got low I'd just stop at the corner store and top it off with any old 10w40 car oil. I geuss this is the basis of my point of the 20w50 syn for v-twins @ $9.00+ a quart is overkill compared to the 15w50quality brand ofsynthetics that run about 5 or $6 a quart. I'm not trying to be a tightwad, I make a good living and have no prob buying stuffif it's neccessary. It's been interesting to see others point of veiw on this matter.

I agree, i have been riding forever it seems(thank GOD) and I remembeer when the best thing wasa buck a qt..

My $.02 is this. I change my oil at about 1000 miles weather permiting, meaning the hotter the more often I change it everytime the weather changes, I change it, before my season starts I change it, before I put it away I change it.

The $ I save on $9.00 a quart oil I am still way ahead and always have clean oil in my bike.

I dont hink anyone is more right than the other its all a matter if choice.

The choice is yours. So the best to you in what you do

Synthetics do stay more stable thruthe extremes of heat and cold better than dino oil. I have a 650 Kawasaki V-twin ATVthat I use to plow my drivewayand have found that since changing it to synthetic it cranks over much easier than it did before. It's kept in the unheated garage and will crank right over and fire right up even when it's below zero out.
The dino oil is good and you may never have a prob with it as I'm sure many folks have used it for years.
Try this:
Take a quart of each one (syn/dino of the same weight)and put them in the freezer for a couple hours and then take them out and see which one thickened up the most. I know this is extreme in relation to motorcycles. Butmost engine wear occurs at start up and I believean oil that better maintains its viscosity will better protect your motor thru the temperture ranges.

No thats is clear as can be, there is nothing wrong with any Quality Dino oil, it has been proven by the tests of time over and over, plain and simple.

The real question is any oil worth $9.00 a quart? only you can answer that. It is like I said, itsall a matter of opinion and choice.
Of course this is the great motorcycle debate, and I dont think that anyone is wrong here. Even the guy that has been using vegatable oil in his bike for years, its what works for you, what do you believe.
