Some background:
Late last fall I pulled the CV carb off and put a kit in it. Then I took it to a local dealer to have it tweaked when I couldn't get it tweaked myself. They ended up pulling the carb and rejetting it. They also smoked my starter.
Over the winter I had the starter rebuilt and I have done a voltage drop test. I have 12.2 volts at the battery and 11.3 volts at the starter while cranking.
When I try to start her she backfires. Like a 12 gauge goin off!! And after cranking for about 10 seconds she will start, but barely. This is when cold with the enrichener pulled out. She sometimes does it while warm too. I don't know what to do. It didn't do this before I took it in and wont take it back to them. However my cash flow isn't strong enough to take it to another shop either.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
I don't know if you do this or if it will help, but when I had a carbed bike I would twist the throttle a few times before trying to start it. That seemed to help, especially in cold weather.
Man i had this same problem on my WG and it ended up being my negative batt cable. Sometimes it would fire up and others it wouldnt. After doing some searching it was a common problem for the negative batt cable to either corrode or split. So i went to a local ignition shop with the stock one and had them make me a match. A lot better quality then harleys for less. Havent had the problem since. May not be your issue but its a $15 fix if it is.
The 46 slow jet is good. 1st check the mixture screw. Screw in to lightly seat it and screw it out 2 1/2 turns. That puts it in the ballpark. I love carbs also, and my 07 CARBED Dyna needs 2 or 3 twist to prime it when cold. Might want to check the vacuum diaphram on the petcock to make sure there's gas flowing to the carb. If that's the problem, drain the tank, remove the 4 screws from the cover and pull the guts out. Cut and old inner tube to make a new gasket. Punch out the 4 screw holes and remount the cover. Trim excess off with a razor.
I'm seriously wondering if I have a vacuum leak around the intake somewhere. When it's cranking over I can catch a faint whiff of gas but when I pull the plugs they are dry and tan colored. Not all carboned up.
