I have a couple buddy's with thunderheaders. I am always jealous of the sound. I planned on picking up a set next year. But I'm not sure of I can wait that long.
For a few years now I've been procrastinating and waiting for the right time to buy one. I realized they weren't going to get any cheaper and when I saw Direct Cycle's price I knew it was now or never. One hurdle finally out of the way.
I've heard that the quality of thunderheader has gone way down. any truth to that?
They've always been pretty bad. Depends how you ride too. They seem to do just fine cruising around. Lots of wheelies, banging the pipe off the ground, etc. And they start to come apart. It's a man's pipe. Rip it for a season, pull it off, weld up the cracks and brace it here and there, shaker can it, repeat. It's a thinner material than most pipes, but this also makes them a lot lighter than most. If you know how to patch up the weak points and incomplete welds before you install it you would be fine for a long time. Another issue is a lot of people wrap them, this holds in the heat and weakens the metal on top of holding in water and rusting it and makes them much more likely to fail.
Well, I have been wavering between exhaust for a few years now but had decided on a Thunderheader a few months ago. Thanks to this post I just pulled the trigger and ordered one from Direct Cycle Parts. The new crown will just have to wait. :-)
My Thunderheader arrived last night. Considering how far it traveled to get to me I was very impressed that the box had 0 damage to it!
I will install it this weekend.
