Superglides is what you get when you can't afford a wide glide...I know this is going to spark up an argument...bring it on! Let me explain, back in 2000 when I bought my 00 Super Glide...I really wanted the Wide Glide, but couldn't afford the extra 5k. So I bought the Super Glide and added this and added that and at the end I ended up spending more that the price of the Wide Glide and my goal was always to make it look like the Wide Glide. Ilove the rake of the Wide glide and the freedom look it has. Don't get me wrong, I loved how the Super Glide handled and it was easier to ride than my Wide Glide...but then again a Harley is not about easy...if I was looking for easy I would have bought a Honda. IMO, the looks of a Wide Glide cannot be matched by any other bike....again, it is my opinion.
Nah, no argument here... but I bought my Super Glide because it was my favorite bike in the whole dealership. Money was never an object.... It's all about personal preference, right?

("Freedom look of the rake?"OK, whatever... To my eyes, that rake looks like it wouldn't handle right. The Wide Glide looks like a laid-backcruiser, and the SG looks more like a performance Harley... which is what I like.)

Here's my story: I walked in the local H-D dealer one Saturday morning, looking like a scraggly-assbum. Neither the salesman nor the finance guy was too sure about me; I think they thought I was wasting their time...

So, I pick out my beautiful black SG, and I'm sitting in the finance guy's office... while he's checking my credithe asks me how much I'm putting down; I say casually, "oh, $6,000 or so... He looks at me, looks at his computer, and looks back at me with a puzzled look. He says, "man, not to insult you, but you've got a bang-up triple-Acredit rating. You can afford any bike in this place. Why just a Super Glide?"

"'Cause it's my favorite, man. Whaddya think?"

I should add, that Sportsters are actually my favorite Harleys, but at 6' 4", I'm just too big for one. So, the SG is as close as I can get.

So, there's your answer, 2000fxdwg. You are right, it's all about personal opinion. We're all different, eh?

I agree with you man! It's all about preference and I wouldn't do without the absence of. In my case, I loved my SG, but everytime I rode a WG it felt so much better. The black and chrome engine, the bobtail fender, the rake, the handle bars, the tank...everything about it seemed just right. In my SG I could zip around with more control, but now that I've had my WG for a while it feels just the same. To me, if I wanted something sporty I would have gone with the Vrod or even more I would have gone with a Buell. My bike's number one purpose is to cruise with or without a b|tch in the back...to be able to hang a tent and a bag to go camping...and too look cool. Like I said before, IMO, the WG has it all. I know a lot of people will say that the SG is poor man's TC88...I heard if before when I had my SG. I do tend to agree, but bottom line is that it is a Harley and it's all about ridding and having fun. One thing I didn't likeabout my SG was the fact that the engine was a pain in the a$$ to keep clean. Chrome and wrinkle blackalways looks good. The rake on the WG is awesome: Maybe is has something to do from childhood memories of Easy ridder, and one bicycle I used to have that had ahuge rake.

Hey 2000, that's not quite an accurate statement. I went in to purchase a Electra Glide Classic. I also had looked at the Road Kings, and I almost bought a Heritage Springer. I had also looked at the VTX and Gold Wing, but this silver SG caught my eye, felt right for me, and I loved the look. Then for the money I saved, I was able to get new exhaust, SE A/C, Stage 1 ECM upgrade, a new seat, highway pegs, passeger pegs, sissy bar, leathers, etc. I'd say it's not a matter of what one can afford. If that was the case, it would be an 883 sportster, and even then that would be entirely accurate. Maybe you should have waited and bought the FXDSE for $26.5K.

^ Agreed.

^^2000, I think you might be surprised how many of us bought our Super Glides because we liked them, not because of the price. Besides... if you're spending $13,000 and up for a bike, there's really not a wholelot of difference between $13k and $15k...

Personally, I like the simple honesty of the SG. It's simple and unpretentious; it's not overdone...

Or, in the words of my buddy Dick Luffman, another SG man, "it's just a motorcycle". It ain't tryin' to be aCaptain America chopper...

When I bought my SG it was 13k on sale back in 2000, the WG was 18k...so that was a pretty substantial difference. I still don't understand your statement about "pretentious"...the way it sounds is that you are saying that the Wide Glide is pretentious? That's a pretty bold statement considering the rest of the Harley line-up. What is the WG pretending to be? You say the Captain America Chopper! What the ???? I don't know what you and your buddy Luffman are smoking, but let me in on it so I could understand.

Ahem. That "Captain America" crack was my rebuttal to the above statement.

If you jump in throwin' zingers, you're gonna get a few back. All in good fun, man.

I think I made my point, which is: for most of us SG riders, it ain't about the money... We bought what we liked best. Period. So did you. It's all good!
