Sorry to hear about your woes mate, that bike doesn't want you to finish college, probably scared it will get sold!
Yeah, no kiddin'! Two things though: I still want a carbed bike, and Harleys are hard to come by in this region, so my FXD rests assured that I will not sell her for a loooong time, especially after all the money I'll have to dump on her to get'ir up and running again. Then again, I could sell and get a 2012 Wide Glide that has caught my eye recently...
It's time to upgrade gear cam or hydraulic tensioner.
I guess I could. The kit part# is 25284-11 but it's a bit expensive. [Currently $569-729 on eBay, $399 on Surdyke...] Is there a cheaper way to get this item? Maybe a used cam plate from an 07-up Dyna or something? I already have the replacement shoes for the spring loaded system though, they should be ok for a couple thousand miles.
About the gear cam...just no. I don't know if I can trust local machine shops to correct/true the crank and EVEN THEN I'd have to get the correct gears and if by some mistake the ship them wrong I won't be able to send them back...it's too much of a hassle.
Those are some cool bags on that yammerhacker.
Hehe, I know right? This little machine is getting me by! It makes a whopping 152mpg, so it's easy on the wallet, just what I need now that I'm about to turn the wrench on my sweet Dyna.
Have you removed the cam plate and oil pump to investigate , when my inner cam bearing went it seized the oil pump and scored my crank, also had to replace the pistons as the underside looked like it got sandblasted, then had to flush the complete engine and remove the oil pan to make sure all debris was removedthis happened last summer, and the tensioners were replaced 2 summers before that, now I have the hyd upgrade kit

No, a mechanic will help me undo the cam plate on Wednesday...actually, now that you mention all the damage your bike underwent, I think the whole engine will have to be disassembled to inspect all the components and make a list of all the stuff that needs to be replaced/improved...oh man, this is definitely going to take a while...

Yeah, I guess there's no way around it...this should be a fun summer project (it's summer here already btw, absolutely the worst time to NOT have a running bike)
Good luck FXD Noob, hopefully the damage you find will not be as extensive as it could be. I'll be following along. It should be an interesting and informative read.
By the way, did you have any indications that this was about to happen? I don't mean the day that it happen but days or weeks before that?
Actually yes.
There was this clattering noise (I guess you could describe it as "top end" noise...which really isn't the top end anyway)
Secondly, during my last oil change, I noticed orange plastic shavings in the used oil, so obviously a tensioner was wearing out. I bought the replacements and was planning to undo the cam plate on April 2nd, but the bike didn't make it that far. (almost though!)
I guess the moral of the story is: when a component shows signs of wear, stop the bike until you can get the issue fixed. (or something like that) thanks for subscribing, you should see more pics this week when I continue disassembly.
I just planned on removing the rocker boxes, but it turns out 2 bolts on the front cylinder hear are stripped! FML!
At least I could remove the rear cylinder head rocker box cover...getting the bolts loose was a little tricky without the official HD tool, but I managed by joining a T27 torx and a wrench...
Since a cam plate bearing came loose and disintegrated, the whole engine has to come down so I can locate all the plastic tensioner pieces as well as the bearing components...but that will have to be tomorrow!
I'm keeping all the little nuts and bolts on separate backs when I need to put the engine back together...
