For me personally, being able to tour is all about comfort. Apes, forward controls and a comfortable seat with a backrest did the trick for me. Windshield is not a must but sure is nice to have. Only thing that would have made my trip better would have been better mid range tourqe, but thats a separate issue and will be taken care of in time.

I put some throw-over saddle bags on and strapped a heavy duty carry bag on the sissy-bar of my '01 FXD and rode from Houston to Anniston Alabama and back last July...except for the monsoon rains I ran into in Mississippi and Alabama and a mechanical problem in Vidor Texas on my way back home that caused me to have to trailer it on into Houston, it was a sweet comfortable ride...

I would agree with everyone else. Get the bike that best fits you. Then mod to perfection. That is what we did with our WG.

The Wideglide. Longer wheelbase. Forward controls.

Here's mine with all the luggage, floor boards and a Mustang wide seat which was much needed.

Default Ride it First!

Have some fun and ride them all then decide. Any Dyna will take you coast to coast. I added removable windshield and backrest for my T-Bag. Good luck!

I definitely love the look of the fat bob... if you throw some saddlebags on it, it'll be just about perfect for touring alone. http://www.vikingbags.com/harley-dyn...saddlebags.htm

My Street Bob does a great job in its current form.

I routinely do 200 miles before lunch. Strap on my seat bag and I can carry a lot of stuff.

As mentioned, the Switchback is the obvious choice, but any Dyna will work.
Here's my Super Glide Custom packed up for Sturgis. I can go from this setup to stripped down like my signature pic in a couple minutes.
