No you do not have to mess with the tank. The gauge disconnects from a plug bottom left side of tank. Once disconnected and unpinned the old gauge housing slides up and out. Reverse the procedure for the new digital gauge. Re pin the plug zip tie out of the way and your done with the hard part. I did not loosen or remove anything when I installed my flush mount gauge kit.

I've been running this setup on my 10' since I pick the bike up in march 10'. Last year when I went to Daytona for bike week the tinted lens on the gauge side flew off when I was cruising at around 75-80 on the highway never to be seen again. Have to buy a complete set again just to replace the lens 
, so I have been running it without. I can tell you this, those LED's are bright as hell with out the lens, I put a piece of black duct tap over them and I can still see the lights but at least they don't blind me at night. Other than that, I love these gauges.
