Default Aluminum Skid plate?

I have been seeing some pics of bikes with aluminum skid plates on the bottom of the Downtubes, like where a chin spoiler would mount, and liked them, anyone know the source?

What's the purpose of such a thing?

Interesting. Not something I have a need for, but here's a pic from the Speed Merchant website. I know what they do for trail bikes but not sure why they'd be used on street bikes. DYNA Skid Plate! $230.00

Probably not particularly functional but I like the look better than a chin spoiler...

...and a little tougher looking than this:

Saves your frame if your front end or wheel comes off?

If the front wheel or front end comes off my bike the last thing I would be worried about is the frame. It has a look of machismo and really adds to the looks of the Dyna, don't think it would bring out the manliness of a softtail.

The bike on the cover of last months (i think) hot bike magazine has that same skid plate. Looks great an would be slightly helpful from any debris getting kicked up. These things wouldny block to much air from cooling the motor would they?
