Did this mod about 5 years ago. Thought I would throw up a couple pics of my rig incase it would give you some ideas for the physical mounting. I modded the stock gauge bracket for use as switch bracket.
I am an electronics idiot, so probably not much help for the low fuel light. Before I changed speedos and was looking at doing this with the stock speedo, I got a fuel gauge from a Street Bob and had planned on hiding it in the recess on the top plate. Figured it would work as original gauge, just not visible.
Being as I didn't end up going this route, I think I still have some parts stored in a box. Let me know if you need anything and I will dig them out.
I still don't understand how you have two gas gauges hooked up. Where is the speedo getting the fuel level info?
Yeah, I have no idea, to be honest. I might find that unplugging the stock gauge kills the one in the speedo, and if so, I'll just leave it connected and hide it somewhere else on the bike.

Thanks! That is exactly what I'm planning on doing. I found a mount on eBay for $5 that I'm going to chop up, that way I can always swap it back if I decide I don't like it.
