what tool to use

anyone know what tool to use to remove the screws of a backreat to remove the brackets. I've tried an allen wrench, but it's either to big or to small

Those look like Torx fasteners to me. Harley loves to use Torx. Invest in a good set.

It's a Torx bolt, you'll need to buy a set. Get a GOOD QUALITY set. Those thing can round off real easy. Hopefully you didn't screw it up to bad with the allens.

OP, If you had to ask what kind of fasteners these are, may I suggest you take a basic mechanical repair course at a local high school or vocational school.
