It seems to be a special tire with a narrow bead made for the narrow rim - and at that point - you can ONLY use that tire if you want a 180mm tire - 1 choice - $200 installed - I'll stick with the high performance tire for $85 installed...
I don't know, Tireater... seems strange Harley would make a tire so proprietary and sort of unsafe just to satisfy the need for a wider tire.
....i mean, you're saying that if I got a flat, I'd have to either use a standard 160, or go to the Harley dealership to get the 180 tire that comes with the kit?
there are a bunch of posts on the Dyna thread with instances where owners have simply used the 180 tire of their choice, and all has been fine
This is easy - what is the recommended rim width for a 180mm tire - I think normal is 5.5" - ANYONE?
I can't believe HD would play games and try to hook you into buying just their stuff either...THAT WOULD BE CRAZY....! or business...
i know, but at the risk of jeopardizing someone's safety? ....and yes, recommended width is a 5.5, i realize that... but owners have used other 180 tires on the 4.5 and have had no problems
If you look at the SE 180mm tire by Dunlop - it is a special tire that is made with a narrow bead - much narrower than other 180mm sport tires. It also has a flatter profile that dosen't help in turns but looks cool. IT'S MADE FOR THAT BIKE...
SE 18MM TIRE REVIEW - too slick - also like an M & M - once the hard outside wore away - you could watch the tire go down. Almost got stuck out of town as the tire went through the cords in 100 mi and almost blew..first on cost me $240 with the wide tire kit - WHAT A RIPOFF!
I got a 3.5" by 18" on front - 5.5" by 17" on back - I had to reduce thedia. of the FRONT wheel to get the wider front tire which they don't sell in the stock diameter. QUESTION ANSWERED?
I like Akront alum rims and ss spokes. Billet boys sell them and many others too....I think steel rims are $40 -100 and steel spokes $40 - ss spokes $90. Alum. is better than steel for performance...
