I put the California approved Screaming Eagle pipes on the bike, and would like it a little louder. I live in a retirement community and don't want it too loud, but it just doesn't sound as good as I would like it.
There are a couple of screws at the rear of the mufflers, can I take that apart and remove some of the baffles, or is it best to leave it alone and buy some other pipes?
Would I have to have the computer re-tuned if I change any part of the exhaust?
I would take the baffles out and take the fiberglass wrap off(the fiberglass might be inside of the mufflers themselves instead of the baffles.) I would do that and see how you like it. You won't have to mess with the computer unless you open up the air intake for better air flow.
I have the SeSp mufflers on my 2013 fxdf. I removed the baffles and drilled the existing holes out bigger ( from 5/16 to 1/2" ) . I also added another row of holes.
It did sound deeper and a little louder. As for the baffle wrap it was a screen type mesh with fiberglass around it. On top of the fiber was another layer of fiberglass type sheet ( 1/4" thick ).
I ended up installing cycleshack baffles and just put the fiberglass sheet around it. The bike has a nice harley type sound now without being obnoxiously loud.
Getting the baffles out and back in isn't easy though. I used a slide hammer, with vise grips attached to it ,to get them out. Then used a ball joint cup ,of the proper size , to fit over the baffle. Put a bearing race installer on that and hit it in with a hammer. Trust me it wasn't easy and I'm an auto tech. Deal with PITA all the time.
I've decided to get the V&H big shots. Don't want the cat in the head pipe. It puts out to much heat and cuts down on the sound I am looking for.
As far as a tunner , I would highly recommend installing a intake kit and tunner. Your motor will thank you for it.
