Lol good morning gents, I bought a 1996 Dyna Wide Glide last weekend, took it out for a boot last night, when all of the sudden I could hear a whining noise coming from the primary somewhere. Noise went away after 2 minutes so proceeded to try to get my butt home. After 5 minutes of no issues, bike just died!!!! Pulled over to the side of the highway and tried to restart it, and nothing. Lots of power to run accessories ect. Called a friend to come lend a hand, and after sitting for 5 minutes, it fired right up. Friend followed me, and after another 5 minutes, did it again. Sat for another 5 minutes, tried to fire it up, and starter stayed winding. Had to pull clutch a few times for it to stop. Now at this point, the headlight was dimming then getting bright again, and could hear a loud click from under seat somewhere. Trailered bike, got it home, and now, power would cut in and out intermittently, each time with a click. Any ideas?????? Im lost!
It is your ignition coil. They will heat up and cut out, cool down down bike will fire, heat back up shut down. Easy fix and common problem with all bikes after so many years. the noise from the primary would be coincidental, probably just a bug working out from sitting, if it doesn't come back no worries, if it does check the fluid level and condition.
With the starter acting up failing to disengage), and maybe also the kill switch and a relay or circuit breaker under the seat, it sounds like there could be a problem with the right handlebar wiring or switches.... a short somewhere.
I had the starter switch go bad and sometimes the starter would not engage and seemed to hang a couple of times until finally it did not disengage and ended up trashing the clutch basket and starter drive gear...all covered on the extended warranty...
Guys thank you very much for the replies! Went through entire system yesterday, and as I was putting the tank back on, I noticed a 3-pin connector under the tank that was broken. Sure enough, I touched two of the pins together, and the solenoid would click! Some electrical tape later, and voila! Like new!!!!! Weird I know, what a relief it was something so weird and simple though!
Glad you got it figured out, but remove the electrical tape and make a solid contact with solder and shrink tube, or the problems could return when you least expect it
