Default wirring noise with ignition off

hi all, i run a 1986 fxstc standard primary , starter, solernoid set up. the other day i started it up and heard a noise as if the primary chain was catching something. to my horror when i killed the ignition the wirring noise kept going, luckily iam at home so grabbed my tools got the seat off and disconected the battery earth lead, on touching it back wirring returned. after my heart beat calmed down. i pulled the primary cover suspecting the jack shaft had not returned, catching the clutch, all looked good no metal in primary case. charged battery up , bike starts and runs fine. i wonder has anyone else experienced this, no doubt this will resurface, but i was surprised the ignition switch didnt kill it. wonder if my solernoid stuck open, any suggegestions apreciated

Sounds like either your solenoid stuck as you said or your starter relay was stuck. Disconnecting the lead stopped it and after reconnecting it stopped it? The starter relay sends power thru the small wire on the solenoid which is what energizes the solenoid pulling it in. I would start there. It is a cheap part and can be found in most auto parts stores for less than 10 bucks. You don't want this happening while you are at work.

thanks for advice, i guess replacing the relay makes sense. the solenoid was new about a year ago. the noise sounded as if something was turning, and really foxed me when turning the ignition off didnt stop it, iam surprised this hasnt cropped up with someone else , maybe my wiring isnt as standard as i thought, even if it looks it. which allowed power through even when switched off. anyway thanks for the reply

you can remove the cover of the starter and see if the solenoid is all gummed up. I had a problem because junk was building up in there and it was not making contact with the brass ring and therfore not turning.

Maybe worthwile to look and clean up anyway. Takes 5 minutes but remember to disconect the battery or you won't forget it next time!
