The man hours required to convert to a chain is more than replacing the belt and the belt is less money in parts.
Again, only if I have a need to be messing around with gear ratios on a continuous basis or if I had a monster motor that was just too much for a belt.
Now I am up to four cents worth.

Most people agree with you.
Some people like working on their bikes some don't.
Some just wanna wash them then pay someone else to work on them.
There is no disagreement, belts are less maintenance. Which is good for the ones who don't wanna get their hands dirty.
Chains also offer more room for tire and rim in the swing arm.

Belts regularly last 70000 miles, some over 100000, find me a chain that'll last that long
