So went to HD to get some fluids and seals. Talked to a mechanic who said I didn't need to remove that to get the trans out?? Anyone??

Why do you think you have to take the trans out? You may have to take the guts out of the case but no reason to take it out of the bike if that's what you're asking.

Yeah....Let's clarify here before he does anything he doesn't need to.

The trans has to come out of the case....The trans case can stay in the bike.

At the point of taking down the exhaust side to start pulling the tranny. Any ways around the special socket? Hate to have to buy one and wait for it to come in. Im not opposed to spending the money just the waiting. So far it hasn't been too bad just taking my time reading and re-reading the direction as I go along. I am heading to the Harley store tomorrow to order as much of the parts as I can that I know I need to replace. Thanks again all.

You could go to a pawn shop, buy a socket cut it in half and weld a piece of pipe between the pieces like I did.

Ok sorry let me clarify a little. Its a 2012 FXDWG 1690cc stage one 6 speed. Yes just the guts out not pulling the whole trans case. From what I was told and can see is I just need to get the race off the shaft. The mechanic told me I don't actually have to remove the gear and all. My new spring should be on ups tomorrow. I'm trying to get her ready to slide it in when she gets here. Hoping to have her ready to ride to work by Tuesday morning. I miss her, she looks so sad in pieces in the garage.

Ok cut the race off with some patience and a dremel. Got it apart, the gears out, paw out, and left over metal out. Spring comes in tomorrow. Next hurdle is pressing the race back on with out the 199.99 HD tool.

I used all thread and some big nuts and washers.

I believe I used the old race too as I think I pressed m ine out instead of cutting it off.

It can be done without the tool.

Do you have air tools? With the all thread and my impact, it was pretty simple...an extra pair of hands would have helped but I am used to working alone. I am married with 19 year old daughters!

Ill be putting some pics up soon. Turns out I have to shrink them all down to load them. I got a new race no big deal. What's an extra 6 bucks after all I have been taking apart on her. Never thought with 2 years and a little more that 20,000 miles would I have had this happen. Just did my 20,000 miles service when I got back from Myrtle Beach bike week.
