Default Sporty to Dyna

Hi all
Looking for some opinions on upgrading from a 06 Sporty to a new Dyna I was going to start with the Dyna last year but the dealer, belive it or not suggested to go with the Sporty. Last week I had a stage one done on the bike that took about 2 hrs at the dealer so it gave me 2 hrs to look over the new bikes. So what should I be looking for in the Dyna series with out all the dealed BS. I though I would start here, can you even do a stage one on this bike and what upgrades should I do before I take the bike home from the dealer. When I bought the 1200L I didn't know sh*t about the stage one and the sh*ty sounding pipes and the Sportster seat! wont even go there

Yes, you can do a stage one on any Harley. If you are planning to do it in the future, I'd get it done as part of the purchase. I started with an '06 Sporty also and wound up trading it in on the '06 FXDI35 Superglide. I was told by others that I would probably upgrade to a bigger bike. I should have listened to them. Two up riding is a lot better and I like the ride a lot more than the Sporty, and I liked the Sporty

My first Harley was an 1200XLC. Seemed like that natural place to start, since my previous two-wheeler was a 750 Virago. The Sporty was great for about a year, then it became clear to me that it just wasn't big enuff. I contemplated a Softies and Dynas and eventually ended up going with the Dyna. I think if you like Harleys, most people will at some point want a 'big' one.

Also, many people told me that if I did go big, try to keep the Sporty or I would really miss it (as they all apparently did). I traded the Sporty in on the Dyna and havent given it a second thought since. That was over a year ago. To top it off, my Sporty was decked out. Still don't miss it.

[align=left]I've always liked Sportsters, I mostly rode Jap bikes because that's what I could afford.When I got to the point where I could buy any bike I wanted I listened to all the guys who said I'd out grow a Sporty and bought a Street Bob.I'm bored sick with it,Thunderheader,DFO,Screaming Eagle AC, it's a dog, and it's for sale. I suggest before you get too exited about a Dyna you ride one and compare it to your stage 1 Sporty. [/align]

Hello. You may want to take a glide out for a test drive first. Check out the street bob. If you do get a glide ride it for awhile before making changes.

DEF. Get the SB or SG. way better deal for the money. And you wont "grow" out of it anytime soon.

Special ED. I think you should get a sportbike if you dont like the riding style of the HDs. It sounds like you like to go fast. Nothing better than an 8K GSXR 600 if you like to go fast. They are by far a better deal than the sportster if you want power and efficiency. Just my .02

Did you sit on a Dyna?

Take a close look at the specs on the Dyna and the Sporty; only an inch or two here and there. The Sporty's are rubber mounted now, just like a Dyna. The sportster makes good power, and with a few mods can make excellent power. They are lighter and more nimble than a Dyna. The Dyna does have an excellent transmission and EFI.

Trading is going to cost you $thousands. The stock Dyna seats stink. You'll want to change things like bars, grips, footpegs. Maybe add foreward controls. Essentially, everything you want to change on your Sporty, you'll want to change on the Dyna.

I think the only real advantage to a Dyna is a little extra passenger room. If you ride by yourself, I'd stick with a Sporty. Use those $Thousands to change the seat, bars, pegs, etc. Even add more power.

Of course, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

i agree. if you're not riding two up, a sporty with some accessories is a great bike. fast, nimble and can easily be confused with being a dyna. I started with a '06 1200C. great bike, but not for 2 up on a long drive. put some pegs, maybe a handlebar and a comfortable seat and hit the road.

Take your time........ride a few different ones......maybe rent one for a weekend. I traded up from the Sporty to the dyna........lots of people do. But try them all first.
