Sounds like fuel filter tube to me. I had a bike one time that would only use a half tank of fuel then stop. Let it sit for a while and enough would finally seep through the tube screen / filter and it would start again. It would then run long enough to run out of gas again. I pulled the fuel shutoff valve out and the filter screen tube was almost solid half the way up from trash (rust in tank). Replaced it and then no problems.
Good point...but does a 2001 FXD carburetor engine have a filter? Mine doesn't have a fuel filter unless it is internal in the tank fuel selector valve and I cannot find any reference to a fuel filter...I will have to go dig up my book and see what it says...
Loosen the gas cap or cover with a clean rag and rubber band around the neck, and see if it stays running, the vent in the cap maybe plugged , creating a slight vacuum in the tank not allowing the fuel to flow from the tank, worth a shot.
Thanks for responding guys. 42k miles. Just put bike back together about a month ago-mostly paint and powder. New fuel filter-internal. Air filter and thunderheader are the only mods.
The bike is clean-no repo, not flooded, etc. I had the tank cleaned and recoated before it was painted, as it was starting to bubble. I should note that I have rode the bike several times since putting back together with no issues.

Then you need to take 10 minutes and check for spark and fuel...when it has quit on you and is not running. If you got spark and fuel then it has to go pop...it's just the way it is.
Will do. Thanks for the input. Plugs and wires are new. I'm leaning more towards the carb. I've also read that it could be the CKP sensor getting hot??

Well...after replacing the CKP sensor, I went for a ride this morning and didn't have any issues. I rode the same distance as I did when it left me stranded and then turned around and came back. Hopefully that will fix it. Thanks for all your advice and replies.

Based on the mileage and year - I've got an '01 also - check the manifold rubber ring behind the card - in-fact check the other two rubber rings going to the cylinders. Mine was split and left me stranded. Easy fix -
