Just have to cut your old ones out with some bolt cutters, just make sure you are at TDC Compression on the cylinder you are working on.
The other way is to take off your rocker covers and rockers, then you can just pull them out the top.
If you are not changing your lifters out, then no reason to mess with the lifter covers. However, I know you are putting new cams in, so you better secure those lifters before you pull the cams out. All this being said, personally I would replace the lifters, but I know it is more $$.

Thanks for chiming in...... I am glad you brought up changing the lifter's, I think that would be a great idea.......... Should I just stick with new stock lifter's or should I go with something else ??????
Don't mind spending a little more to make sure all is done correctly........
I have the Harley service manual, plus there are numerous install video's,
S & S has a pretty good one.......... I have viewed that one 3 time's now and do not even have all my part's yet......LOL..........
A lot of good lifter choices from not so expensive to somewhat painful. I'll just mention 2 that I would look at first: S&S and GMR Performance: Steve at GMR has just recently started to sell his own lifters, they were not yet out when I was doing my engine build so I bought S&S but he showed me the first few he was testing/verifying and I believe anything he puts GMR on will be a great product:
