Default Stator Questions

2001 Road Glide TC 88
So My bike lost all power last night on my way home. The first thing I noticed was the check engine light, so I looked up at the voltmeter and it was at like 10 VDC and after riding for about 20 more minutes went to aout 8 and then died. I am assuming its the stator but I have not tested anything yet. So it could be the voltage regulator. My questions are 1) what is the amperage of the stock set up? 2) Should I upgrade to 50 AMP? and 3) What are good replacement brands should I need to replace it?
Thanks
Jeff

2001 was in the range of pretty bad stators from the factory. Test the stator and if bad (which is a high probability) the new ones will be ok. I have a 2000 and had 5 stators until HD got it right and have had the last one so long I can't remember when it was installed. You probably have the old one with the thin black coated wires.
You can pop the derby cover and if you smell burnt electrical you'll know - it's a one of a kind smell.

At the top of this section there are a couple of Stickies on checking your charging system, read and follow them, to diagnose your bike.

I oopened it up last night and it was definitely bad. One of the wires was burnt and not even connected to the stator. I ordered this
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Will install as soon as it gets here.
