Not your average speedo problem
I've only had the bike for a few weeks. Here in KY there arent many riding day s in march so for the most part the bike has been sitting in the garage. i finally couldn't wait any longer so i bundled up and headed out on a 37 degree day to take my first joyride. (my last bike was a rocket so i was pretty excited about having a harley) everything worked flawlessly as it should. all lights, signals, instruments, auto cancel blinkers and all that jazz. Made it home that night and parked her in the garage and hooked up the tender.
About a week later, the weather got back up in the 50s so i decided to drive her to work one night. as soon is i turned the ignition switch on i knew something looked funny. THE SPEEDOMETER BACKLIGHT AND ODOMETER WERENT WORKING! they were working fine when i parked her last and now they were completely dead. the only light in the whole gauge that illuminated was the red security system light. and it stayed on, solid, whether ignition switch was on or off. below is a list of the symptoms and some of the things ive ruled out after troubleshooting these last few days
-no speedo backlight, speedo needle does not move, no odometer
-self cancelling turn signals and horn (and all other lights and blinkers) work
-bike starts and runs great
-all fuses are good (checked with multimeter)
-there is power present at the ORANGE and ORANGE/WHITE wires at the connector to the speedo
-no noticeable corrosion of connectors
-replaced battery (needed it anyway)
-red security light stays on all the time
-neutral light and blinker indicators work fine
I'm really at my wits end here and i cant really afford to shell out another 3 benjamins for another speedo just to see if thats the problem. surely the fuse wouldve fried before the speedo. Thanks guys for your input!!
