Default disabling smart siren II

I put a smart siren II on my '18 Heritage. I did some work on the bike the other day and had to disable the siren. I followed the directions: turn the ignition on then off and pull the main fuse before the security system re-arms. The siren stayed off for a couple minutes and then activated. Tried it about 4 times and got the same result. Ended up finishing up with the siren screaming at me. Fortunately it didn't take long. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Keep the fob near the bike before disconnecting the battery. Alarm must be disarmed before the battery is disconnected or else the alarm will go off and siren will scream.

That's really weird - it should have gone off immediately or never. Are you sure you pulled the main fuse, the large independent fuse?

The fob was hanging on the bike through the entire time. I know the system was disarmed when I turned on the ignition because I heard the chirp. And I pulled the 40a fuse immediately after turning the ignition off, before the system would have had time to re-arm. I had other things to do so I didn't try to troubleshoot the problem. I'll have to dig into that next time I get a chance.

Yep. It's unmistakable. The main fuse is way bigger than the others and says 40 amps right on it. According to the wiring diagram, that removes power to everything on the bike.

Well, maybe I’m doing it wrong, or maybe yours is newer and works differently, but when I want to work on my bike I turn the ignition on to disarm the security, then, with ignition still turned on, unplug the siren.

Then I shut bike off, disconnect fuse and/or battery if necessary.

On my bike you can't get at the siren without removing the battery. It's attached to the BCM, which is mounted behind the battery compartment. Here's what the siren installation instructions say: For 2007- later vehicles equipped with security siren: With security fob present, turn ignition switch ON. After system is disarmed, turn ignition switch OFF. IMMEDIATELYremove the main fuse per the service manual.

Yes, I read that online …. I wouldn’t believe everything you read, especially with the way HD writes it’s instructions.

My 2009 owner’s manual says to, with fob present, turn ignition to run, let the security system disarm, then pull the fuse (with ignition still on.)

The 2018 touring owner’s manual says the same thing, but adds a caution not to forget to turn ignition to off before putting fuse back in.

Pulling the fuse or unplugging the siren, take your pick.

This works for me when I have to pull the fuse..Key fob present, ignition on, pull the fuse. I have not turned it off before putting the fuse back, maybe I did without thinking about it...
