I changed out the stock gas gauge for the flush mount set and the stock speedometer out for the upgraded speedo/tach combo. All H-D parts, all brand new, all the correct part numbers. In addition, I replaced the float sensor assembly in the tank. Again, stock and correct part number. (2x actually) Everything has been tested on another Dyna and they work perfectly.
The problem - none of the gas gauges read correctly. On the dash, the fuel pump icon comes on when the tank is full (goes off as soon as the thank is about 7/8 empty) and the digital gauge on the bottom of the speedometer read empty when it is full. The tank gas gauge reads the proper way (all light on when full) but goes red (as in almost empty) when it is 1/2 full.
Has anyone seen this problem before? Any mechanics got any ideas on a fix? The local H-D shop had it for over 3 weeks and couldn't figure it out.
My guess is if the gauges and seńsor are new and work fine in another bike, it's not there. That leaves 2 possibilities - ECU or the wiring.
Gas gauges tend to not work. My 07 FLHTCU actually works for a few years. I wonder if cleaning the contacts along the bar it travels would help. Also a hack like me taking it in and out the tank to replace the pump, probably didn't help. Though I don't think it was wokring anymore before that.
Common response you get is your tripometer. Which I do, and is just another way we don't require Harley to make a better product.
When I changed mine from the stock gas gauge to a flame one, mine also no longer is accurate. Was wondering if disconnecting/reconnecting the battery might "reset"/recalibrate it?

Why would it? Do you recalibrate your gas gauge every time you put the battery in? Also to recalibrate something you have to put it some kind of state, and tell another item what state it is in, or run it through various states.
Only thing you will be doing is resetting your clock.
Double check the wiring from the sending unit, check the resistances of the sending unit at different fuel levels. Lower resistance is fuller tank. Why did you change the sending unit?
