Default Stator question.

2012 Ultra Limited. If the windings on the stator are dark and dirty as in the picture is that means the stator is bad? I’ve been having a no church issue in my bike, after replacing the voltage regulator the problem continued so I decided to get in there and look at the stator, the rotor magnets look okay but 3

The 3 dark windings are full of metal particles.

of the windings look dark. It looks like metal particles. Can you guys help? thanks.

Both continuity test and ground test came out okay but the rotor test was not good however, visual test of the rotor does not show any broken or loose magnets.

2012s had tons of voltage regulator issues - they would typically just stop charging. Even the replacement regulators were bad for a while.

Those windings look cooked.

There isn't a rotor output test - if the rotor is good, magnets are not broken/loose and are magnetically sound, the failure to put out AC is the stator.

Got the PM and going to reply here for anyone following the thread. When I said there is no rotor check above I understand that if the bike is not apart and passes the stator resistance and continuity tests that the rotor could be blamed if there is low AC output. But, as clarified above, the rotor has no broken or shifter magnets or stripped splines AND the stator is burnt and this had an overcharge condition (means the rotor works).

2012s had massive regulator issues, and the regulator failed and was replaced. The failure was an overcharge situation which means the rotor obviously has magnetism.

In this case, it seems apparent that the stator windings are fried. If this were my bike I would replace the stator and immediately check it is not overcharging as that would be a regulator concern.

If impacts have been used on the comp nut, that can break the magnets free or weaken the magnetic field but that doesn't seem to be the case.
