Default aftermarket tachometer

I have a 2015 Softail with canbus system , I would like to add a small tachometer is this possible or a major headache? Changing speedometer to combination speedo/tach is a last resort .

It depends. I put a tach on an 09 superglide by tapping it to one of the wires coming off the power commander on the bike. With canbus though I'm not sure if doing that would change the resistance of the wire and cause problems. The other issue is power to the tach but that could be solved by putting a small fusebox directly off the battery so you have fused power that isnt canbus and run a switch so you can turn it on and off manually. Now that i think about it could you run the tach pickup directly to the coil to get a signal that way? Thats how it used to be done. Personally i wouldnt mess with any canbus wires as changing the resistance could cause issues in whatever systems share that wire.

There is a tach output on the ECM that may or may not have a wire in it depending on the year/model. Power can come from a the switched power on O/W wire just don't overload the circuit.

thanks for the input , looking at wiring diagrams for bike . Looks like I will have to just wire tach up as suggested.
