Default Tachometer Troubleshooting

hey guys, I had half of the tank off so I could do a handlebar switch on my (new to me) bike… while open I was looking around to try to figure out what might be missing from what drives the tachometer. Does it have something to do with this bit? Anybody have any ideas of what I can do to get the tachometer up and running again again? Thanks in advance.

That "bit" is a lamp ( bulb) socket

schematic does wonders
moons past the tach was taken off the coil but now it comes from the ign module or the ecu.
snake the wire out to see if there is an open or short.
on the output going to the tach, you can check with a vom with frequency capability as the signal is a square wave. you can also check the tach with a frequency generator. the hd shop should have a tool to drive the tach.

I checked a few 1990 wiring diagrams. No FLST was equipped with a tacho. Some other tacho equipped models pick up the tach signal (pink wire) at the negative (-) pole of the coil where the blue wire from the electronic module connects.
To activate the tacho you'll also need 12 volt power (orange accessory harness wire) at the tacho housing plus a ground wire.

I did some more research at www and found a mechanical speedo/tacho combination that looks like yours, wiring instructions included!

@FXD2003Rider wow thank you very much! With this info, I believe I should be able to figure it out. I’m gonna try and give it a shot next week when I have some time off for Christmas. Cheers!
