2022 FLHT Voltage Drop
I've been reviewing all sorts of voltage / regulator / stator / battery issues here and across the internet and have been trying to find something similar to what I am experiencing. First the basics - 2022 Electra glide purchased new, nothing extra on it at all: no radio, no extra lights, no heated grips - just bike. New battery purchased this spring, bike runs great absolutely no issues. I left the ignition on for 1-1/2 hours (long story for another time). When I got back to the bike I not only realized i had done that but the bike was making all sorts of clicking sounds (like relays) as if it kept cycling through the systems check procedure except very erratic. Battery dead and I was fortunate enough to be across from a garage that loaned me a jump pack to boot it up.. I did that, it started easy enough and I ran it home, a 80 mile trip, mostly highway speeds. The volt meter showed fine 14.5 at speed, when I had to stop for fuel or lights the meter dropped to 12. I would expect that given the state of charge of the battery at that point. Stopping for gas I didn't shut the bike off and after filling the tank I watched the fuel gauge take literally 40+ miles to finally read full. Made it home fine, placed the bike on the tender. The following morning I was going to work and watched the gauge again drop to 12v from 14.5 it went into low idle. I've had the battery tested just to make sure I didn't get a dude but it checked out just fine. Now I'm watching the gauge like a hawk continually and VERY quickly returns to 12v when the bike is idle. I don't seem to remember it acting this way prior to leaving the key on. Voltage measure 14.5 across the terminals when above or around 2K and drops to 12v read with DMM. In a healthy system what should voltage be at warm idle? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Did I possibly smoke my charging system when I left the key on and it was seemingly bouncing in/out of system check? I will be doing some testing this weekend but I appreciate any insight.
Thanks much - Rich C
