I recently run into a problem with my 98 ultra. The bike died after a 300 mile round trip about half way back home. Push started it, and got to the end of my driveway and it died again. Thought it was the battery because it looked as if it was the original, and bought a new one. Rode it a couple short trips to the gas station, walmart. Next day I rode it to work. Got in the parking lot died again. Got it home charged the battery back up, Noticed that the volt gauge wasn't fluctuating with the rpm like it had before. Checked the stator ac was at about 26-30 depending on the rpm. Thought that was all good. So the only other thing I thought it could be was a voltage regulator, ordered one, rode it about 20 miles noticed the volt gauge was not fluctuating again, and the volts had dropped to about 11 on the gauge by the time I got home. Checked the stator before I left and it was putting out 26-28 at idle. I am at a loss here and could use some advice, any help is appreciated. Sorry for the long post.[sm=dontgetit.gif]
Volt meter should be reading in the 14 v range with the RPM in the 2000 -2500 range. But yo knew that didn't you.
If the volts are anything below that with all of the accessories off (lights, heated grips, vests, and etc) then as you already know, the charging system is not functioning as designed.
The later owners manuals have a good section on Trouble shooting the charging system, not to certain about the 98 manual, but the concepts will be the same.
Now for a real stupid comment, you did verify that the battery cables are free of corrosion and tight, didn't you? Okay, I said it was a stupid question.
Yes, battery cables are tight. The only thing I can come up with would be the stator, and if this is the case should I replace the rotor also or only if it is bad?
it appears that the stator is working correctly. 26 to28 AC is the same as 13 to 14 volts dc. I would check the regulator output and make sure that itis working like it is supposed to. If it is then you have a wire that is bad from the regulator..
