Since I'm not getting any help elsewhere, I'll try here..........
My bike was starting only intermittently and I traced that down to a loose main ground wire to my battery. When I was having that intermittent problem, and still continuing now after I traced it down and fixed it, my speedometer now reads about twice as fast as I'm actually traveling. Same for my odometer. I have a 97 dyna wide glide and had the speedo/tach combo installed by a pro about 5,000 miles ago.
Bad news 9well not good for the DIY-er): I'm a service manual kind of guy so here's what it says. The trouble shooting flowchart is in Sect. 8, Chart #2 for inoperative/high/low readings and in the Sect. 8-Speedometer Performance Check: you need to hook up a speedometer tester [p/n 41354] to test which simulates a signal from the speed sensor so you can take voltage readings, meaning, unless you have one handy, it's a trip to the local shop you trust to check speedometer function or to locate bad connector or wiring.
