i have a 81 shovelhead and it has kick and elect. start, sence i had it ive never been able to kick start it and the only way it would start is by using the choke. i could ride 30 miles and stop for a smoke and i still have to choke it and when i first start the bike i almost drain the battery. i installe new intake bands and gaskets and cleaned out the carb and installed new points kit.

Did you reset/check your timing after the points install. Dwell changes timing but timing doesn't change dwell.

Another thing you should check is that the advance mechanism is working and not froze/locked up.
