I have a 2007 Electra Glide Classic (EFI) and live in So. Cal so we don't have cold weather. When I ride like 25 miles or more and the bike is good and hot. If I let it sit more than 5 -15 minutes (so it has had time to heat soak), it wont start for about 45 to 90 minutes until things have cooled off nicely. I can hear the Fuel pump start up when I turn on the ignition and when I try to start it, it just cranks. I have tried rebooting the ECU, replacing the system fuse, replacing the temp sensor and checking connections there and the crank sensor connections. I am out of ideas and my local Harley service tech says he would just be shot-gunning any approach to find such an intermittent issue. Any ideas where to look next?
When its hot and it won't start lets assume its getting fuel because you said you can hear the pump, but have you pulled one of the plug wires and check for spark? Whats the mileage and upgrades?
Okay I have spark (I put a spark indicator on both front and rear cylinders and they're good) and when this first happens, I can smell fuel. IT just cranks and cranks. after a few minutes of cooling, for a very short period, it may fire briefly with tons of misfires and lean fires then stop. It then goes back to the original problem of not firing at all.
I'm guessing here but sounds like a timing problem. If all you can smell is gas I am still thinking its getting enough, If you say there is plenty spark I am wondering if your crank sensor is the problem. I don't know what they are worth or if you can check them hot and cold but dig around you will find something. Hope that gets the ball rolling.
Okay: I did change out the crank position sensor with no difference. Here's a diagnostic point. Spraying starting fluid in the intake will make it turn over. So the fuel I smell, isn't enough to start it. What do you think? Fuel Pump? Whatever it is, it is heat related. Since when the bike is hot, it will run fine if I start it 10 minutes after I shut it off but not if I wait 15 minutes. Is my gas getting hot in the tank? I did take off the gas cap several times to check for positive or negative pressure, Even with the gas cap removed, I still have the same problem,.
so you have no power problem when driving it hot or idling hot. but when you turn the engine off and attempt to restart the engine it only spins over freely with no ignition fire. have you checked the pressure of the fuel regulator maybe the spring is boarder line or sticking open.
