Hi all,
Purchased new 2008 Harley Road King in December. Presently have 750 miles on bike. After returning from ride and parking in garage , there is a very strong odor like raw fuel, and I mean very strong, like there is an open can of gas in the garage. There does not appear to be any leaks. The odor is around the engine area. I also notice the odor when I am riding and stopped at a traffic signal. I have taken the bike to the Palm Bay Harley dealer, but they didn't find anything. This is the first year for the cableless throttle control. Just wondering if anyone else with an 08 model is experiencing the same issue.
Had that same issue on my 06 Dyna a while back. The fuel line was cracked where it snaps on to the injecter hard line. The plastic nipple was leaking, but since they put that plastic cover over the whole line, I couldnt see it. Its worth looking at...
This may sound stupid but have you checked your gas cap? I have had mine build up pressure after sitting in the hot Florida sun for just a few minutes and it will start to vent. I noticed it after pulling into the garage and getting that smell. Just a thought...
My 08 ultra does the same thing. I've posted on it before. Mine only seems to do it after its good and hot, say 50-60 mile ride or moreand the gas tank is below1/2 full. I've had it to 2 dealers and got the same can't find a problem with it. I tried a diffrent cap, and have searched for leaks but still found nothing. I think it's from the heat of the engine heating up the partial tank of fuel up and the fumes are coming out the vent tube. The fumes are so strong I have to crack the door open to vent the garage so it wont blow up. I'm going to try adding some tubing to the factory vent tube and route that out under the door and see if it fixs it. The only other options are leave it outside to cool down before parking it in the garage or fill it up on the way home before parking it in the garage. The theory is that more liquid in the tank will obsorb more heat before making fumes. If the vent tube doesn't work I may buy some reflect a cool sheets and stick them on the bottom of the gas tank and see if that helps.
Have you done a stage 1 on yours yet? I haven't done that yet on mine, it runs real good but I hope to add pipes and stuff when I come up with the money. Its supposed to help with the heat of the 08's. Good luck figuring out the solution. If you do figure it out let me know, I'll do the same for you. Take care, Rick
