Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I own a 2000 road king with a 95" screaming eagle conversion. Is converting to gear drive over chain worth the money and time? And is this something a home mechanic can do easily?
I am not a pro but gear drive cams are better in the fact that there are no tensioners or chains to worry about and maintain. Also they supposedly make slightly more peak power than a chain drive due to a more accurate time at high rpm. One thing you must due before committing to a gear drive cam is to check your crank runout to make sure you are within spec for a gear drive cam. If you runout is not within spec it not possible to get the correct gear mesh for the gear drives. I'm sure the pros will chime in at some point.
I am new to twin cams and could use all the help I can get....
There are a couple specialty tools that aid the job along.
You want to check your pinion shaft r/o, and you really want no more than .003" if going to gear to gear.

...............and I'll also add if going to that gear drive, with an assumed 85cc chamber/flatop piston from S/E, an Andrews 21G would be a very good choice for that touring machine.

Andrews 21 is a shoe-in at the advertise compression of those 95" HD kits, for low-mid power in a touring bike.
A 26 wants 9.6-9.7 cr, and a 37 wants 9.8-9.9, to fully optimize the delivery and output of the worth of the installation, or at least from we've found.

Without a doubt a gear drive will almost always out perform a chain providing the person installing it knows how to set it up. Back in the 80's an 90's all the small blocks (cars) i built had gear drives. easier to dial in. its all about tuning. A little noisier but so are the right cams.............
