Hello, I am in the process of getting parts together to upgrade my 2000 Road King, I currently have:
1. seasoned jugs bored to a set of 10:1 FORGED Keith Black pistons (6.7cc)
2. Mikuni 42 Carb
3. Cometic 0.30 top end kit
4. SE tapered adjustable pushrods
5. S&S premium lifters
6. DTT ignition
7. Thunderheader 2 into 1 exhaust
I'm open to suggestions for what cam and head package I should run.
I am 240 lbs. and like to hit the throttle quite a bit. I do not tour and very rarely go above 100 mph. Mostly enjoy racing red light to red light.
I'm not afraid of higher compression either so that is not a concern.
Thanks in advanced.
We'd set the compression at 10.8 with a Wood 8 cam, and use an S&S 1.800" port manifold(we bought the remaining stock from S&S)and a set of our Stage III Super-Tour Heads(see our site)
Thayers Sales and Service, Corfu, NY, recently tuned one(98") to 115/116, and have had that 8 cam in our 98"ers tapping on the 120 hp door before.
Lastly, change your over-all gear ratio to 3.37.
The bike will run VERY WELL!

Several cams to choose from with intake close timing between 38* and 42*; the S&S 570, Tman 600SM both worth a look to build the heads around. The early heads would not accommodate hi-lift cams but whoever ports your heads should be aware that they need modification to accept the higher lifts. I am not a Thunderheader or KB piston fan but that's your call.
Shortly after starting up, get the bike on a dyno for some lower rpm pulls to check AFR for a "break in" tune.

Hi Scott, Would I see similar results even though I'm only going 95"? Will this setup have great bottom end and what would the cam, headwork and manifold run me?

Hi Djl, I got a really good deal on the exhaust and KB forged pistons. I did some research on both and didn't see any horror stories. Have you had problems? Out of the three cams you listed which one do you recommend the most and why and who would you recommend doing the head work for the cams you suggested?

There have been problems with the quality of the Thunderheader, i.e., fitment issues and yellowing chrome as well as the notorious torque dip but from what I have read recently, the newer pipes are better in that regard. The pipe sounds great but just too loud for my taste. I guess you have never heard that KB is the acronym for "Ka Boom"? I have no personal experience with KB pistons, just prefer CP and JE.
I am currently running the 600SM in my all bore 107" and very happy with the performance. Also carbureted but with the SE CV44, not a Mikuni.
There are two reputable builder/porters that sponsor this forum; Hillside Cycles (Scott Palmer) and VTwin Performance (Kirby Apathy). Calling them and chatting them up about your build would be worth the time. I don't know where you live but there are other porters that might be closer to you; not sure. Any porter will have their own ideas about cams, compression, etc. so be prepared to listen to alternatives based on the experience of a particular builder/porter and what you expect from the build.

If wanting to concentrate on more lower-mid range power, a Wood 6H would be a great choice, won't spool off that hp number, but the 8 cam is not a slouch down low either.
The power would be a bit less being slightly less cubes.
Give us a call and we'd be happy to go over the details.
