Im sending a crank out to Revolution Perf to be trued, welded, and balanced.
Im building a 103ci 10:25:1 comp, T-Man 525 cams, Ported SE Pro MCR heads, HPI ported 51mm throttle body.
Im thinking of having them Lighten it up. Bike is a 08 FXDWG.
Knowing they remove 3-5 lbs off the crank, the eng should rev nice and quick. Im thinking the WG is light enough the the loss of reciprocating on the crank wont hurt the performance and bog the eng down. The bike does see alot of Smokey burnouts.
Thought about doing it when I sent mine out to Dark Horse but here is why I didn't:
More vibration will be felt and that mass is also needed at the higher rpm's when motoring down the highway/higher cruising speeds (keeps the speed steady).
Yes, it will definitly rev much quicker, but if you don't see a **** ton of drag strip time or not a bar hopper then I wouldn't recommend it...... IMOP
You would be much better off going to a belt drive. you would loose more than 3-5lbs directly off the crank and less hp going to the centrifugal mass. changing you overall gear ratio to around 3.37:1 would also make a huge difference.
While you are increasing the power of that engine, by no means does it fall into the catagory of a maximum effort application where ounces add up.
Bob Wood had his flywheels lightened at one time years ago in one of his bikes.
He called here and made mention of that while on his Dynojet it did not manufacture any more(or less) power.
I had him go to the "time" section of the data, and he then saw a reduction in the time it took to pull to the same rpm.
We(I) lightened the wheels on our AHDRA B/T Mod bike via thinning, turning the OD to S&S XL racing diameter, knife edged and then pork-chopped them like an automotive crankshaft c/weight, using Carillo H-beam rods.(read VERY light)
It revved instantly, but even precision balanced, it shook like a dog shitting hammer-handles at it's 17.25 cr, 1800 rpm idle speed.
