lifter noise
I have a 2010 cvo ultra 585 S&S cams ,SE roller rockers ,tuned with 45000 miles. At 40000 miles it started making a sound like rocks in a tin can. I had the lifters replaced with fueling HP lifters. I thought it was fixed it was for 200 miles. At that time it started ticking when the oil gotten warm like it had a bad lifter. I rode the bike for another 5000 mile and decided to replace the lifters once again. Fueling warrantied the lifters I replaced them with another set. I set the push rods at 3 turns 96 thousandths like the fueling directions. I have S&S push rods 32 tpi.
Now the bike still clatters when the oil gets warm and at idle. Anytime the oil pressure is under 32 psi it ticks.

You can set more preload if you like. Do you know what the total travel of the plunger in your lifters are. If they are .200" you can set your S&S pushrods witch are 32 tpi to 4 full turns and 3 flats which will equate to approximately .140" preload. Or just add one more revolution to the 3 full turns you have now and that should quiet things down and will put you at .125" preload. If not you might have a little too much wear in the rockers.

Even if they are 24 you can still go 3 more flats.. If you have to, count the threads to make sure.... if they are S&S 32 tpi 3 turns will only put you at .093" and will be noisy at idle.

We use S&S valvetrain components here w/o issues whatsoever.
We load the S&S lifters to .140" to keep valvetrain noise to a bare mimnimum even during thermal expansion at full operating temps.
A Baisley spring, or Zippers shim in the early cam plates, along with the proper viscosity oil as stated in the HD service manual for the ambient temps the bike will be operated in, also helps.
