I did something similar to my backing plate, but I tapped the oil drain holes and used two 1" long set screws with a heavy dose of red loctite, then peened the set screws and the edge of the plate to keep them from coming loose...

That's pretty much what I did w/ my SE heavy breather just that I ran the tubes below my frame, instead of a catch filter.

I am using the Doherty/Trask Myst Free breather kit in my rocker boxes so I hope to not get much blow-by at all. That was my reasoning for mounting the filter hidden behind the backing plate. I didn't want a hose hanging down right in front of the prettiest part of the bike. If it turns out the filter I have is getting a lot of oil, I will move it under the bike, but I am hoping not to have to do that...
