2002 RKC, stock 88" motor, 30,000 miles. Checked my lifters last night. Service manual says to move the plunger with your index finger. I have one that I couldn't move. Put a cut off pushrod in a vice and tried to move the plunger that way. No luck. I have not ridden the bike since about October, but I don't recall any lifter noise. I'm in there doing Cyco shoes and B-148's.
Wondering if this lifter needs replacement or just do all 4? Sort of wondering if it could have got jammed up when I cut the pushrods, but I was careful to be on the base circle.
Why not take that lifter apart and check it out? At 30K miles, for another $65 you can install a set of CompCams VThunder 850-1 lifters if replacement becomes the plan.
Pretty much have been thinking that myself. JEGS is closer & might have faster shipping on their 850-1's at pretty much the same cost. I've been wondering if the VThunder you mentioned are the same thing (identical)?
Took it apart and here's what I found. About 3 shards of a slightly orange material. Possibly translucent bits of tensioner shoe. Looking at wear, there is some in the inside top of the body in one area, like something ran crooked. Next, there is a crater or divot in the top outside of the plunger almost opposite the oil hole, but higher up.
If it not trash, does the orientation of the oil holes (body & plunger) matter when reassembling? Haven't put the clip back in, but seems to work ok now.
Edit:
Figured out that the hole orientation shouldn't matter since the plunger hole is in a wide grove that will capture oil. Getting pretty tired of the energy on this and will probably just buy a set and be done with it and future concerns
Anyone know if it would be Ok to use 1 Comp Cams 850 lifter and 3 stock Harley ones in my 2002,stock 88 motor?
With adjustable pushrods, would the adjustment be the same? (Is lifter travel the same?) Im guessing it would be fine or else stock pushrods could be a problem
