.....very few of us owners that have a good amount of miles on the 120R will tell you don't buy it if your looking for reliable.

I assume by this remark you're not opposed to this engine on my bike, Breakout, then?

There are two versions of the H-D 120, the 120R and 120ST. If you use the advanced Search, in the blue bar above, and search for '120r' you will find some light reading from around HDF. As an S&S engine owner, I recognise that they build very solid engines, which a few posters above can improve upon, if you find a 124" wanting. Of course S&S also build a 143", for those in dire need of extra performance!

I have the 120R. Originally $6250 Canadian.
Plus $800 Clutch
Plus $xxx 58mm TB
Plus $980 Black Supertrapp 2:1 Supermeg [and then now a Chrome one, the black one wore through after a while
Finally a real Tune from Lonewolf - The dealer pooped the bed on the tune -- HARSHLY.
20,000 km later it blew up, I believe it was a lifter that cratered. Had it repaired by Lonewolf with T-man 662-2 Cams, Black Ops Lifters, Darkhorse crank, 4.070 [+0.010 os] Pistons and Cylinders. ~$3000

Rode late in the year, base gasket leak [not warmed up fully.] Did the gaskets myself.

Last halloween did a dummy move and fired 'er up with 8 beers down range. Just repairing it now from a head gasket leak and a found rear outer exhaust spring broken.

Upgraded pistons and heads to the T-Man 124R kit.

Truthfully at this point - I wish I'd gone with the 124 S&S and sent the crank away to Darkhorse. Changed the lifters?? And ensure there was a cam that was more suited to higher torque less HP.

Bite the bullet and go 124 IMO. Save if you need to, and wait. the 120R or ST is sub-par and needs quite a bit to make it right.

Oh you could also be that guy and go 143" which would be my next move if I did another motor. There is something to be said for a warranty, but where is the adventure in that?

Best of luck whatever you decide.

H

There are a lot of variables that will determine that.

Does your shop do a lot of complete engine swaps?
Do you have a performance clutch already?
Do you have an aftermarket exhaust/intake/throttle body/inj/tuner?

3rd Commando's is a great unit. I'm guessing NL is the Netherlands? I'm not sure how easy it is getting repair parts for Harley's there but even here it takes a while to get replacement parts for the 120R. My bike was down for quite a while when I had the lifter explode, dealers just don't keep their parts in stock and have to special order most things. Just an FYI if your on the fence, it might be more of a headache down the road.

I thought the cranks from S&S were very true to start with...why send a it off for more work? ...don't get me wrong, they (DarkHorse) do great work but is it worth the additional cost?
