Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
My winter mods stretched into spring, but got my '06 Fatboy back together. Put about 400 miles on it since wheels powder coated, etc.. I checked cam chain tensioners, pretty good; both front and rear. I did a Full 10k service, I used to wrench/race. (Bought it last July with 6k on the clock).
Riding back from work Saturday. I could hear a slight wurring sound. Then every once in a while a slight tap. Sounded like a leather strap hitting a fender. On Sunday after screwing it on in the twisties, I now have a bang, not consistent though.
So, no bang in neutral. No banging with clutch disengaged nor in gear while stopped. No bang on start up. No banging when holding front brake and letting clutch out in gear. So doesn't seem like a compensator. No bang when first taking off from a stop, just an occasional banging when cruising. Definitely getting worse. Pulled primary plug, clean. Primary chain and drive belt checked and good for tension. Engine revs fine, sounds good. Bang/klank only when moving.
Best way to describe sound would what a primary chain with a broken link would sound like when hitting the primary case. Although while riding, sounds like noise is coming from directly under the tank, hard to track down.
I'll pull the primary case tomorrow. Inner primary bearing? Ideas?
From your description it doesn't sound like compensator, inner primary bearing, clutch, etc. The fact that the bang occurs intermittently and only when moving and the fact that your wheels were remove and reinstalled would cause me to be looking for a rear wheel bolt that may be backing out and hitting the swing arm or something at the rear end of the bike.
When something like this occurs, I always revert to the last thing that was done to the motorcycle for the source of the problem. It sounds like the wheels and the 10K mile service were the last things done to the motorcycle so that is where I would naturally start. If the problem was related to the 10K mile service, I believe the problem would have presented before you rolled up 400 miles. That would have me looking at the wheels.

Excellent advise from you, as usual. Thanks. My first guess was the new chrome bolts I used on the rare pulley. Checked them - they're good. I could still see my mark where you tighten them an extra 1/8 of a turn. On my way back I coasted down a hill, no noise.

I'll keep working on it. Thanks for your reply.
You might check to see if the rear belt is properly adjusted.
When the bolt came loose on the compensator on my 03, I had some weird, intermittent, had to duplicate rattling. It's always worth checking to make sure it's tight.
Ding, ding, ding.....we have a winner... djl please come to winners counter. Put primary back together, without really finding anything. The bang is gone, (prolly loose chain), but that tap was still there. Pulled front wheel - bad bearing.
