Default cam chest upgrade question

Hi I have been reading all the posts I can on the options for cam shoe upgrades. I cannot find the info I need. I have a 2000 softail standard with 35k. a 95" kit, se 203 cams. My question is, what do I need to upgrade to the get the hydraulic tenshioners, while keeping the cams that I have. I will use my stock pushrods, I will replace the lifters and use the b 148 inner bearings thanks for the help.

It depends on how it was done in the beginning. If the original cam plate was used with the stock shoes, you'll need a new plate, pump and cams. You may have gear drives and you won't need anything. Needs to be inspected to see what you have to find out what you will need.

Hi, I checked out the shoes when I bought it used with 15k on it. It has oem shoes and stock camplate. So yeah , I need a cam plate that will work with the se 203's, and a new oil pump. Harley had a hybrid cam plate a while back, but I don't think its available any more.

The hybrid kit is available, 25284-11 about $425 from an online discount dealer like Surdyke or Newcastle. Includes hydro tensioners, outer roller chain, cam plate and pump; the OEM inner link chain is retained to run with the OEM cams. Save yourself some $$ and replace the tensioners with the CYCO tensioners. Pull the bypass piston out of the bore, polish it up with a Scotchbrite pad, 86 the OEM spring and replace with the Baisley LMR-002 spring. The OEM cam plate is actually quite robust and IMHO, more than adwequate for a 95" motor with SE203 cams. I run the OEM plate on a hot 95" motor with gear drive cams; 30K miles so far with no issues and it will run to 100K with no issues if I ever have the time to put that many miles on the bike.

If you must replace the oil pump, the Daytona pump for about $120 offers more flow and scavenge capacity than the OEM pump; I just don't believe you need it. The CYCO tensioners and the Daytona pump are available on EBay.

thanks for the reply. Good info. I thought that the -11 se kit was for use with conversion cams. Something to do with the cam plate bearings themselves. I believe my stock cam plate has bearings ,where the one in the -11 se kit does not.

The HD plate and oil pump were a nice addition to my '05 Road Glide, using same cam as yourself and 95". I am sure others make similar product, but the HD part was easy to install and did everything I needed it to do.

Should you decide to do as DJL suggested (which is what I do); here's a tool to remove the inner cam chain tensioner without removing the cams from the plate.

After that it's just a matter of changing the shoes for Cycos. I opted for the Baisley spring in lieu of a new oil pump and am very happy with the results.

The 25284-11 SE plate accepts the original cams and bearings. Using the '07 up cam plate and pump uses the conversion cams.

Nothing wrong with the OEM plate, or pump for that matter.
Cyco shoes, Baisley spring, or Zippers shim, good inner cam bearings. Done. Ride it.
