I have my bike in the shop due to scrubbing/rubbing sound while in left turns. Tech was able to verify the noise on test ride. They are telling me the rear brake and disc are worn to limits. I have a number of questions about this. Is that normal for a disc is worn with only 20K miles on it? and if the disc is the sound of the rubbing, the wheel itself must be moving in order for the disc to drag. They had no answers to the movement part. When I asked about the condition of the wheel bearings, they told me that would require lifting the bike up. I was a bit put back by that comment as I most certainly expected they would at least take the load off the rear wheel to find any free play or wear. When I pointed that out, they said they would jack the bike and check the bearings. WTF???? I told them what I expected them to do. They find my brake pads worn, that's fine at 20K, but the disc? It was not warped BTW, Just worn to limits they say. But when I asked about how that disc could ever rub in the caliper, without the whole rim flexing/moving, as in bad bearings, they were lost for an answer. Not liking this very well, and we are well over 400.00 bucks now. and all they did was replace the rear disc and brake pads?
Did you look at the old pads? Were they worn evenly? Did they check for a stuck caliper piston? That can happen if they get really dirty and that will cause premature wear. Unless they took the time to check the runout on the rotor I dont know how they could tell if it was warped or not. Being warped could cause it to wear out. Also, you can easily tweak a rotor during a tire change when putting the rear wheel back on if you are not careful. It is really hard to predict how many miles you will get out of brakes as there are so many variables involved. I would think your wheel bearing should be fine at 20K. Just some thoughts.

Really depends on how you ride. 20k my fronts are usually shot. Front wheel bearings on 06 and up bikes are usually questionable by then i have gotten as much as 25k out of thosend they are shot. Friends have had similar milage out of the front bearings. Never had a problem with the rears but i change them our everyother tire change.

You got some good fellers there

It's '08-later on all but Softail (which is '07-later FRONTS and same '08-later REARS)...changed to 25mm
Brakes are wear items, the same as clutches and tyres, as there is no way of predicting how each rider will use them. 20k miles doesn't sound very much and is certainly less than I would expect to get, however I doubt if a dealer will be surprised. If your bike is OK now then ride on, but take it elsewhere next time it needs any attention. It doesn't sound if you get on with them and I'm not sure where the cause of that is!
I should have asked for the old parts In hind sight. I get along with them fine, they were very pleasant. Parts were about half the price, so 200 for labor is not unreasonable seeing as they charge 140 per hour. If I had more time, I could have done the change my self, just didn't have the time or inclination do do that just now. That's the price I pay I guess for being lazy. Not sure if the checked for the piston being stuck, though I did ask that they check that. The sound is gone, so , yes.. Ride on is the term of the day. Plus they washed the bike.. Seeing as I just rode 900 miles in the last three days and some it in heavy rain, the bike was a mess. so I if I add that to the work they did, not a bad deal over all. Today I found my front rotors are warped on my car.. Always something..
