Thoughts on S&S Cycle 124 in. Hot Set Up Kits with Heads
Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I agree. The 640 at 11.4-11.5 is perfect for a 124 for many miles. This gives great manageable power down low and great power when the rpms are up. Easy to tune with out pms and good low end manners.
Easy to achieve with a head shave and pistons that come with the kit.
Had one of the first 10:8-1, .640 124" crates released 15 years ago from S&S and just couldn't leave it alone out of the box. Went for a 50 shave and haircut (to 11:3) using stock Pistons, and a couple other mods straight from the crate before install.
Very happy motor with no issues and very happy customer (me).
My riding style completely changed when I went from 88" to 95" to 107" to 124".
I bet that most of the unhappy people were expecting to hop on the bike after the mods and use their muscle memory like before. There is a learning curve when going bigger in the HP/TQ department.
Depending on what their previous build it, they could be in for a bigger surprise. I know when I went from a decent 95" build to my present 120, it was a big surprised. Now I'm used to it and would like more.
like I said before,IMO,weather your looking for a high RPM hot rod, mild touring build or anything in between,do your homework & find a builder that will work with you & fit a build to your needs, not tell you what you want
Hey! Great thread I know I'm chiming in late. I am considering the 124" hot set up from S&S, I have an 05 88 Electra Glide Classic EFI and I am wondering what everyone used for a programmer? Power Commander? HD Street tuner??? And did you dyno the bike to create the fuel/air map or did you find a close enough map and do the auto tune?? I found a close enough map and did the auto tune on my sport bike because there is no dyno up here in the great white North of Ontario! when I look on the Power Commander web page it doesn't hava a downloadable map for this set up

I really should have talked to you before I dove into my Evo build. Live and learn, I guess.
