Question S&S vs. HD 110 kit(s)

It might be a redundant question but, taking serious consideration into selecting one of these kits or at least cylinders/ pistons which hopefully S&S will eventually offer separately. For those in the know, which one of these kits are a better option? I consider S&S products to be better quality and stricter tolerances than HD Screamin Eagle products. Just don't know which is the best bang for the buck. Based on research I am not interested in either kit(s) configuration with regards to their cam selection hence the reason I might just opt for the cylinders and pistons and build accordingly.

If you care to add a comment please indicate your pros and cons to each kit.

Thank you in advance....

A ton of the HD kits on the street in various configuration making decent numbers with very few issues reported. Piston/cylinder kit 92500039 is available from an online discount dealer for about $1000. I think Boartracker sells the kit for $975; Newcastle for $1085 but have to check shipping cost as it varies from one dealer to the next.

As for S&S, no magic bullet. My go to local builder/porter sells 98/103 kits and some customers request S&S parts in lieu of OEM. The builder does all machine work in house and has sent several sets of S&S cylinders back because the bores were not up to spec. I have a friend that is on his 4th S&S 124" motor; all made good by S&S under warranty but he has had to R/R a motor four times; not fun since he is spending more time replacing motors than he is riding he bike. He is on the second repair on the 4th motor. So, not throwing S&S under the bus, obviously they sell quality parts. However, I am saying that there is no guarantee regardless of the vendor that everything is up to spec. You should check, measure everything before assembling and, if not up to spec, send the parts back. Conversely, if you assume everything is up to spec, assemble and run into problems you might find yourself in a world of ****......

S&S does offer the piston/cylinders separate, I called them and asked. I believe the list price was about $1099.

Thank you for the insight djl I agree with your statement about checking and measuring everything before assembly and never assume either kit is correct. I didn't realize that was such a problem with S&S motor and wonder if its a isolated case but, in either event if this individual is on his fourth engine

InthewindMN - I had heard/ read that S&S was only offering the Winter Power Package on another forum at this time. I just went over to S&S website and sent them a message of inquire whether or not the status of cylinders/ pistons being sold separately, waiting for a reply.

I am sure my friend's problem is an isolated case; just making the point that blind reliance on the quality of any vendor's product can lead to problems.

The one thing that I question and have not gotten an answer to is the ring end gap that S&S specifies. It's HUGE! well, huge for a normally aspirated street motor....

Can anyone tell me why the spec from CP would be .024-.026 and .032-.035 ?

For what it's worth I've got a complete top end S&S 106 kit with 585 easy start cams.

About 35000 miles on the S&S stuff.
Never a single issue since the build at 10000 miles. Bike has about 45000 on it now.

I went over to S&S web page today and tried to enter those numbers and nothing came up. On another forum a S&S sponsor chimed in said that the cylinders and pistons are not being sold separately at this time. I am sure it will come out eventually but, they are pushing their Winter Power Package now...
