It got real cold real quick here so it is sitting in my garage at the moment. Right now I hope to get out next week and get more break in time done. I won't really have any more updates until I hit around 1000 miles and take it in for dyno or something goes wrong.
I did a few miles over lunch today to get more break in time. There is definitely a lower chug sound to the motor now at the exhaust. The power response is higher and more even at the lower rpms. There is a noise on the front cylinder like a ticking. I had it before but it wasn't quite as pronounced. I might check my pushrod heights but I am certain I did 24 flats on the adjustable S&S.
How many miles are on it now? Mine was broken in after 27mi, probably well before that. 3 heat cycles then out on the street to vary the RPM's, plenty of accel followed by engine braking decel up/down hills and the rings were seated.

Up to 10 miles. I plan to check to see if there is any play in the push rods on the front cylinder tonight but we have some rain tomorrow. 40's on Wed and will put in about 20 to 30 miles that day working the engine then move to some harder acceleration. I need to find a compression tester to confirm everything is good there.
Took off pushrod covers and they spin with no play. The noise is definitely in the rockers. Give the pushrods another 3 or 4 flats or see if it still makes the noise after the engine warms up?

So it was warm enough today that I put another 15 miles on the top end. I realized that the sound I heard after putting the top end back together was there before, I just hadn't had my head that close to the rocker boxes while it was running until I was doing the warm up steps. I had heard it before tearing it apart while riding and wondering what it was, but it isn't and wasn't loud enough while riding to make me concerned, yet. I'll have to keep in mind replacing the lifters the next time I do engine work because one may be a bit soft.
The longer ride today has me confident in the strength of the build but there was some definite popping every time I backed off the throttle so I'll be increasing the AFR in the mid and low rpm ranges. I am running all open loop now so I was defaulting on the rich side to start with anyway. Downshifting and hills went smooth. Looking forward to some highway time once I get past these first 50 miles.
