After much deliberation, I've decided to step up and go 117"

I'm convinced myself its more power than I'll ever need, which seems like the best reason to do it. A wee bit more money than I wanted to spend, but whatever...

After speaking with a couple suppliers, here's my plan:

Crankcase to Darkhorse for appropriate crankwork/timken/case bore
117" Cylinders/Pistons (10.25:1 compression) from Fuel Moto
Heads back to WFO Larry for whatever magic he feels is appropriate
SE 58mm throttle body (not sure on what injectors yet)
Cams--still researching, but leaning toward S&S 585
Exhaust will be my existing Fatcat w/ big bore baffle.

I've talked with a few reputable local tuners and come up with some good options, so this build will be finished off with a proper tune.

I've got the engine out of the bike. Once I finalize cam selection, I'll send the heads off to Larry and get things moving. Still at least a few months before its going to be anywhere near warm here in MN (its -2 now) so I'll be taking my time with this.

Not so much a low opinion of the TMax but it can be hard to find a tuner that works with them enough to optimize a tune using the TMax.

Exactly the problem I ran into. I had pinging, and the dyno run I had (not a tune), as well as the carbon buildup on my pistons showed my tune was definitely off. When I bought the Tmax I thought that meant I'd never need a dyno tune. I'm more informed now.

Reindeer,

You'll be very stoked!

Btw, I'm running 5.3 injectors with my SE 58 TB in my 117" motor.

Cheers.

Yeah, The unfortunate thing about Tmax is that you really need to know how to tune to use one if the build is a little bit off. Also the older maps ain't that hot, especially if you were trying to use a build that was different in some way like the compression being off. Build that have may have something different like heads or compression ratio might have issues.

Doing it yourself by reading plugs, and seat of the pants/mileage takes time. Once you got it close, changes like pipes tune in real easy. Sometimes without tweaks.
