If you are thinking that way I wouldn't. But you could pull primary cover and then easily turn the engine over. Depends a lot on what you are wanting to do.

You need to be more specific. In what state of teardown is the bike? If you have lost the ability to turn via the rear wheel, which is likely if working on the trans, remove the outer primary (clutch cover?) and turn the crank with the compensator retaining nut; remove plugs first; deep socket ratchet and done.

Pop off the derby cover and adjuster plate. Turn engine is direction of rotation via clutch hub nut.

I usually try using the kick pedal, it seems to turn the motor quite well.

Of course, that only works on my '62. On the modern bikes, it's easier to put a wrench on the compensator sprocket and turn that, preferably with the plugs out. No compression that way.

If the compenstator is removed you can use one these tools.
