Engine Mechanical TopicsDiscussion for motor builds, cams, head work, stripped bolts and other engine related issues. The good and the bad. If it goes round and around or up and down, post it here.
I know that this post is old but I was wondering if you ever came to a conclusion to what really happened here. Because I have the same exact issue going on with 9000 on my build. Before I tore down, upon
start up and for twenty minutes of running and heating up I was getting a clatter that almost appeared to be a valve clatter. Upon teardown I found exactly what you have in the pics. At this point after measuring everything it points to poor fit. Can you tell me details on what you came up with and where you went with your build from there? Appreciate it thanks.
While you should really start your own thread, it was probably a bad tune after 9000 miles coupled with some running condition that exacerbated the issue. What do the tops of the pistons look like?

Well sorry man I was just asking the op in his outcome in passing. Tune had nothing to do with it. Have already had all parts examined by competent shop and getting ready to proceed with rebuild. In my case it was due to piston to wall clearances were to tight. Tune has been reviewed already and is fine. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

How can they review the tune without the motor running?

To many could be this or could be that only can go on facts. Tune can only be analyzed without the bike running so interpretation also comes into play. Bike was dynoed twice during the 9000 moles to be sure things were in line. Yes cost me money but also wanted peace of mind. So when I see that piston to wall clearance was ridiculously tight Thats where I begin not reaching for things that cant be proven by data. I really only came onto this thread because I was interested in knowing the ops outcome not to debate my build. Thanks again for your show of interest
